Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin never met in real life. But what if they had?
This new orchestral work imagines that meeting. The two are often spoken of in the same breath, yet their musical worlds could hardly have been more different. Gershwin came up through the rough-and-tumble of Tin Pan Alley, banging out the latest tunes for publishers. Bernstein arrived from the halls of Harvard and Curtis—an intellectual force who brought his gifts equally to the podium, the classroom, and Broadway.
Gershwin’s gift for melody remains one of the most memorable in American music, and Rhapsody in Blue remains his lasting masterpiece. Bernstein’s writing, with its grit, angular rhythms, and restless energy, first found its home in the classical world before crossing over so completely in West Side Story.

Lenny & George Walk Into a Bar explores that historical “what if” in three movements. The piece plays out as a musical tug-of-war, each composer’s personality pulling in its own direction and answering the other in lively back-and-forth.
